Codee3 vs the Codex app
Both run coding agents on your projects, several at a time. They differ in which agents they run, where they run, and what keeps the agents in step.
The Codex app is now part of OpenAI’s ChatGPT desktop app. It runs Codex on OpenAI’s models, on macOS and Windows with Linux in preview, with a ChatGPT plan or an API key. Codee3 is a Windows IDE that runs your own Codex beside Claude Code and Gemini CLI. Pick the Codex app for Codex alone. Pick Codee3 to run several agents on your own plans.
Codex app suits you if
you mostly use Codex and ChatGPT, you want cloud tasks and automations that run on a schedule, or you work on a Mac or Linux.
Codee3 suits you if
you work on Windows and want Codex beside Claude Code or Gemini CLI, on your own plans, all reading one project brain. With Founder, an orchestrator hands the jobs to helpers, each in its own safe copy.
Can I use Codex and Claude Code together?
Yes. Codee3 runs the Codex command-line tool on your own ChatGPT sign-in, beside Claude Code and Gemini CLI, and Codex reads your AGENTS.md files as it does anywhere. Your files and git history don’t change, and the ChatGPT app can stay installed.
- 01Install Codee3 next to the ChatGPT appBoth can stay installed.
- 02Install the Codex command-line toolCodee3 runs it, signed in with the ChatGPT plan you already pay for.
- 03Open the same folderNothing is converted or moved. Add Claude Code or Gemini CLI when you want them.
What people ask before they choose.
Can I use my ChatGPT plan in Codee3?
Yes, through Codex signed in with your own account. Codee3 never sees your sign-in, and does not provide or resell any AI usage.
Is the Codex app available on Windows?
Yes. It is part of the ChatGPT desktop app, which installs on Windows from the Microsoft Store (OpenAI’s docs, checked 2026-10-21). Codee3 is a separate Windows IDE that runs the Codex command-line tool.
What happened to the Codex app?
OpenAI’s changelog says that on 9 July 2026 Codex became part of the ChatGPT desktop app on macOS and Windows, and existing Codex app users kept their projects and settings.
Can the Codex app run Claude Code or Gemini CLI?
Its models page lists OpenAI’s models, and other providers only through a compatible Responses API endpoint. We found no OpenAI page that says it runs Claude Code or Gemini CLI (checked 2026-10-21).
Do Codex and Claude Code share one instructions file?
Not on their own: Codex reads AGENTS.md and Claude Code reads CLAUDE.md. In Codee3 every agent reads the same project brain, so your decisions live in one place rather than in two files you keep in step.
Is Codee3 an alternative to the Codex app?
On Windows, yes, if you want more than Codex: it runs Codex beside Claude Code and Gemini CLI. It runs Codex itself, so it can also sit next to the ChatGPT app rather than replace it.
What does Codee3 cost on top of my AI plan?
Nothing for up to two projects open at a time. Founder is US$149 a year for unlimited projects and the orchestration. Your AI usage stays with your own plan.
